How do I configure my laptop to communicate to a DeviceMaster or Moxa?

setting custom IP on laptop

To communicate to a Comtrol DeviceMaster or Moxa to troubleshoot or set it up, you will need a laptop computer and a network cable. If you are attempting to troubleshoot or modify an existing device, you'll need to set your laptop to the same subnet and gateway as the device, and set the laptop IP address offset one digit from the device to avoid conflicting IPs.

To get started, type network into Search on your taskbar, then click on the View network connections.

network settings

From the network connections page, locate the Ethernet connection you're using to connect to the device. If you're unsure which one it is, unplug your network adapter or cable and see if a red X appears. Plug back in your network cable or adapter and see if the same X disappears. That'll be your Ethernet connection. Right-click on it and proceed!

After right-clicking, select Properties and continue on.

On this properties page, locate the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), choose it, and click its properties option.

Typically, the default will be Obtain an IP address automatically, so select the Use following IP address option, enter your IP for your laptop one digit off from your device, then set the subnet and gateway to the same values as the device. Example, if the device IP is 10.1.2.3, we want our laptop to be 10.1.2.2 so it won't conflict on our two-device network. Click Ok and now you're ready to continue troubleshooting!
