What does Destination host unreachable mean during a ping test?

destination host unreachable

If the device is powered off (or unplugged), you’ll often get:

"Destination host unreachable" because no ARP reply comes back, and your PC (or router) has no way to reach it.

Ensure the device has power, cycle power if it does, and try again. Note: to power cycle, unplug or turn off for at least 30 seconds before powering on again.

If power is not the problem, a network administrator can further help by checking network settings.

  • Devices are not on the same subnet

  • Default gateway is misconfigured or missing

  • The destination is down or its IP doesn’t exist

  • A firewall or router is blocking the route

  • You're pinging a private IP across the internet without a VPN or tunnel. Example, pinging an on-prem DeviceMaster from a Cloud server.
